On both sets of actions, the devil will be in the details: How will the relevant executive branch officials and agencies implement the new orders? Will the proposed “assault weapon” restrictions ban ordinary rifles that simply come with a pistol grip or other cosmetic feature (like the New York law that Gov. Cuomo signed earlier in the week)? And that’s before we even get to the feasibility of getting anything through Congress or whether the president is willing to negotiate to get at least some of what he wants.I still have major problems with HIPAA reporting, and using doctors as an ATF clearinghouse, but I was pleasantly surprised to see a conspicuous lack of importation restrictions.

Cato at Liberty with some smooth analysis
This bit dovetails nicely with my surface impressions of Obama's big announcement today. Granted I worked a 12 hour shift, and haven't really dug in yet, but from the AP news synopsis I looked at, I have to agree...the executive orders, with some reservations, are much more sensible than the proposed legislative actions.
